This reminds me of a David Foster Wallace essay where he talks about telling his students that he's going to grade them according to standards of Dominant American English. I forget which essay, but it was in Consider the Lobster. This is a good idea, where you provide some exercises where they can incorporate elements of their native tongue. Seems like a good compromise.
