Reasons why attendance has helped me

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about three years ago. It’s been a journey, and I’m still figuring things out. I wanted to take a moment to talk through why attending support groups has helped me. Some of the benefits of attending these groups have been unexpected, so I wanted to make a quick list of reasons why group attendance has been beneficial for me. I’m hoping this article could encourage you or a loved one to attend and see if it’s right for you.

I don’t want to mention the names of the specific organizations I’ve been working with. You can google the names of some mental health support groups. I attended one group which was specifically tailored to people with bipolar disorder and another group that included people with any mental health challenge.

Group attendance has helped me believe in my diagnosis

I’ve had late onset of bipolar disorder. It took my doctor a month or two to reach the bipolar diagnosis. The symptoms were clear enough, it’s unusual to have an onset later in life, and I’m kind of an old dude. I was told that bipolar disorder was my thing, and my doctor basically gave me this diagnosis, along with a broader explanation of the symptoms and what I could expect.
