Something similar happened to me.

I accepted a promotion into a position that had seven direct reports. The director immediately axed different manager and left me with most of his people and responsibilities. It was a slightly different form of responsibility creep.

I think it's ok to do a job you want to be promoted into for a short period of time. That can show that you're qualified, but I would push to make things official at your next performance evaluation.
