I want to preface this article by telling you to get a colonoscopy done before the age of 50. Just do it. It’s a no-brainer. You have to be sure you don’t have ass-cancer. I’ve also learned that some doctors are now suggesting that this procedure happen when you hit 45 years old and not 50.

I’m writing this article to provide perspective, not medical advice. I’m just a dude who has gone through this procedure.

I know someone who didn’t get a colonoscopy and he’s dying of colon cancer. I don’t know what to say about that, other than to reiterate that you have to get a colonoscopy.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Studies have estimated that cancer mortality is 68–88% lower for persons who undergo colonoscopies than those who do not.

The prep sucks, but too bad. I’ll give it to you straight. For my prep, I drank two 16 ounce Big Gulps of laxative and shat my guts out for about eight hours.

My grandfather once said something that resonates with me as I get older. He said, “You have to be your own doctor.” There’s certainly a degree of truth to this statement.
