I think I disagree with this statement. Part of the benefit of point estimation, any point estimation, is to provide a forum for engineers to work out their thoughts on the complexity of the tasks, the the steps involved. This is usually a valuable exercise, even if people aren't using points as a success metric. It's also an opportunity for junior engineers to get a better understanding of how senior engineers think through and scope out a coding task. Story point estimation is also a good time to get engineers to start thinking about impact analysis on downstream or inter-related systems.
