IT Management
I Quit My Job After Taking a Promotion
I could have learned from Dave Chappelle
I recently watched a clip of Dave Chapelle's interview on Oprah. He talks about reasons why he walked away from the 50-million-dollar contract. It’s an interesting case study. After listening to this interview I realized that there’s a lot of great information that can be extrapolated into the circumstances I faced as an IT manager.
I’m not writing this article to better explain his feelings, Dave Chapelle is eloquent beyond far beyond my abilities. Just watch the clip. I’m writing to point out the parallels that I felt which happened at my previous place of employment.
It can be extremely difficult to explain to someone why you may need to walk away from a job after accepting a promotion. You’ve been working towards this promotion your entire life, right? It’s not that simple.
The primary question that I should have asked is, “How is this promotion going to affect the scope of my responsibilities.”
The first warning sign that I faced after taking the position? The department director fired another manager and asked me to assume that manager’s responsibilities. This was a cost-cutting measure.
